Does Your Website Need Special Schema for Google AI Search?
Google says there is no special schema required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Here is what Irish businesses should check before paying for extra markup.

No. Google says websites do not need special schema.org structured data to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Its existing SEO guidance still applies.
That matters if you have been offered an “AI schema” package as the missing ingredient in your search visibility. Before paying, ask what the proposed work changes and which documented problem it solves.
What Google actually requires
To be eligible as a supporting link in these Google AI search features, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Eligibility does not guarantee that Google will show the page.
For an Irish business reviewing its AI SEO, this gives you a practical starting point. Establish whether the relevant service page can appear in search before treating structured data as the explanation for a missing AI citation.
Useful markup describes the page you already have
Structured data can describe information on a website in a standard format. Google says that it should match the visible text.
If your page says you serve one county, adding a longer service-area list in markup does not make that an accurate description of your business. If a service has been discontinued, the visible page needs attention as well as any associated markup.
A sensible review checks the relationship between the page and its data. Ask the provider to show you the information being represented, where a visitor can read it and why that markup is appropriate.
Ask what the proposed schema work is meant to fix
“Improve AI visibility” is too broad to explain an implementation. A useful recommendation identifies a specific issue: incorrect business information, data that no longer matches the page, or an appropriate supported type that has been implemented badly.
Request a before-and-after example. You should be able to understand what will be corrected even if someone else handles the code.
Be cautious about a claim that one proprietary markup package is required for Google AI Overviews. Google explicitly says no special schema is needed for those features.
Check the page content alongside the technical work
Look at the question you want the page to answer. Can a customer find the relevant service, who it is for and the area you cover? Does the page contain enough detail for them to decide whether to enquire?
Google recommends making important content available as text and helping people find it through internal links. Those checks give a website review something concrete to investigate.
A missing description of your specialist service needs a content decision. Extra markup cannot supply the explanation a visitor needs to read.
Keep your reporting specific to the platform
This guidance concerns Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. It should not be presented as a complete explanation of how every AI assistant selects sources.
When reviewing a GEO or AEO proposal, ask which platform was tested, what was observed and what evidence supports the suggested change. Keep technical eligibility, observed citations and resulting enquiries separate in your report.
